The BSO's 2008-09 Season opens with a program inspired by Fate and Destiny that truly illustrates the power of music. Verdi's dramatic Overture to La Forza del Destino is followed by violinist Lindsay Deutsch performing music from John
Corigliano's Academy Award-winning score to The Red Violin. Tchaikovsky's popular Symphony No. 4 - inspired by his own personal struggles with Fate - concludes this electrifying program.

Virgil Thomson - Acadian Songs and Dances from Louisiana Story
Felix Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto
Jean Sibelius - Symphony No. 2

From the Bayou to the icy tundra of Finland, this program spans the globe and a great variety of musical styles.  Music from Virgil Thomson’s Pulitzer Prize winning film score to Louisiana Story opens the concert and acclaimed violinist Jennifer Frautschi performs Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto in honor of the 200th Anniversary of the composer’s birth.  The concert concludes with the most popular symphony from Finland’s most popular composer – Sibelius’s glorious Symphony No. 2.

The BSO’s All-American Pops concert features a musical tribute to the Wild West, with great music by Ferde Grofé and Aaron Copland.  Nationally renowned folk musician Bobby Horton joins the BSO, bringing the cowboy songs and folk ballads heard in Copland’s brilliant ballet score Billy the Kid to life.

Our 55th season finale features some of the most colorful and melodic music ever written.  Ravel’s enchanting Mother Goose Suite brings five fairytales to life, and Rachmaninoff’s ever-popular Rhapsody features Van Cliburn Competition Silver-medalist Antonio Pompa-Baldi.  The concert concludes with Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations – a set of musical portraits of many of the composer’s closest friends.
